The next update now mentions the feature in the changelog, but apparently it was already shipped with the previous version. The menu item to scan the bar code on the WhatsApp web site suddenly appeared in my app, without any update. Similarly WhatsApp recently added their second screen solution to the popular messaging service. This is a clear indication that the feature has a UI part which was already included in the previous update, but was hidden from the user until announced publicly to everyone. However, once I installed the next app update-mentioning the new poll feature in the changelog-the UI for polls also changed significantly. One could argue that maybe their app UI is so extensible that it can display anything as provided by their API. I was able to answer polls on my phone running the Android app, but I was not able to create them. Apparently, parts of the feature were already shipped before the feature was released to everyone. Recently Threema added the ability to conduct polls in a group chat. Only later the feature suddenly becomes active without further notice. There seems to be a recent trend for smartphone apps: hidden features are shipped in app updates without mentioning the new functionality in the changelog. However, a group of former Nokia developers formed Jolla, a company producing an alternative phone operating system called SailfishOS. The N9 was released shortly before the Nokia phone department was switched to produce Windows phones for Microsoft. After a few years I continued with the Nokia N9 with the now abandoned Meego. ![]() Originally I used a Nokia dumb phone and then in 2009 got the Nokia N900 as my first smartphone with Maemo as OS, which was so much joy, easily extensible due to the open platform, and had a sliding keyboard. For me, this is the first time I left the niche market of alternative phone operating systems to go mainstream. Already in September 2017 I migrated away from Sailfish OS and I am now now using an Android phone. ![]()
